Hotel
Since the 1920s the Poolburn Hotel has been the meeting place of the Ida Valley. Nestled in the remote highlands of Central Otago, between Dunedin and the Lakes District, the valley is home to a close-knit farming community. No longer a pub, we now offer lodging and activities to adventurers from afar. Please send a message if you have any special requirements or dietary restrictions. For larger groups, we have other rooms, just contact us for more details. With chickens, pigs, sheep, and goats, there are plenty of opportunities for kids to have a taste of farming. We rear our own animals, have a veggie garden, and love healthy organic food. Our highlands landscape is dramatic and rocky with some spectacular sunsets and starry skies. Guests love exploring the unique terrain, especially around the Poolburn Dam which has been popular for films, with movies being shot in the area every year or two. Biking enthusiasts can ride the Poolburn Gorge Tunnels & Viaduct, the highlight of the iconic Rail Trail. The new Lake Dunstan Trail is also recommended and takes you past some of the classic Central Otago wineries. The rocky terrain above Alexandra or pine forests of Naseby is great for cross country mountain bikers. In summer stand-up paddleboarding on the beautiful Blue Lake at St Bathans is a good option. The gold rush era township is a popular visit and there is even an abandoned gold mine along the way. Gold panning is also possible if you know the right spots! We recommend travelling in a vehicle with gravel road capabilities for maximum flexibility. Send a message if you have any queries regarding activities and adventures.
