ABOUT THE AREA:
About Golden Square – A Historic London Gem
Golden Square has a rich and varied history dating back to the 17th century. Originally farmland, it began development in 1675 with the intention of housing the gentry. By the 1700s, it had gained a reputation for prestige, attracting foreign diplomats and notable figures.
The name "Golden Square" is believed to stem from "Gelding Close," referencing land once used for horse grazing. It also has a darker past, having served as a plague pit during the Great Plague of 1664–1665, before eventually being redeveloped.
Throughout the years, it has been home to notable residents including Swiss artist Angelica Kauffman, the first female Royal Academy member, and even hosted Thomas Jefferson during his only London visit. Charles Dickens also immortalised it in Nicholas Nickleby, describing its peaceful character and musical boarding houses.
In the 19th century, Golden Square became a hub for the wool and yarn trade, with around 70 related businesses based there. During WWII, an air raid shelter was built beneath it, and the post-war era saw the garden beautifully restored.
Today, Golden Square stands as a tranquil green space in the heart of London, with its historic charm reflected in the surrounding architecture and atmosphere—making it a truly unique and desirable place to stay.
